This has forced companies to evaluate their business models, strategies and workforce to remain competitive in the ever changing technological landscape.


Digital Transformation in Businesses Accelerated By COVID

The OECD projects that a third of all global jobs, more than 1 billion, will be transformed by technology over the next decade. This translates into over 1 billion people who will need to be retrained and reskilled by 2030. A daunting enough challenge on its own, further exasperated by the COVID-19 pandemic. The corona virus has highlighted the urgent need for companies to embrace technology already available to maintain business as usual. From the use of cobots (collaborative robots) that helped keep factories running during the lockdown and also enabled staff to return to work on the factory floor, maintaining distance while supervising production. To a boom in digital tools such as Google Drive, Sharepoint, Microsoft Teams, Zoom, Trello etc, that allow for millions of workers to work from home. According to a survey by PwC, out of all CFOs who were questioned, half said they were planning to accelerate automation. The cost of not investing in automation and digital solutions are now higher than to operate without them. Even more so since the end is still not in sight and it remains largely unclear how the situation will develop.


New Skills Needed - But Which?

With new tools in place, employees will also need to be trained accordingly. A holistic approach would be to incorporate the training of these new tools with the trend/skill set that will be most in demand in the future job market to secure inhouse expertise and knowledge. 

The WEF in 2016 published their Top 10 Skills needed to succeed in the job market in 2020, showing a strong shift to social skills, and the growing importance of creativity and empathy. A combination of hard and soft skills is needed for a well rounded employee, and is the foundation of a modern company’s success. Employees are also more inclined to retrain and upskill themselves for job stability, especially those who have been unable to work for longer periods during the lockdown. Jobs will certainly be designed to be more remote and staff need to be digitally enabled. 


Remote Work and Digital Learning Here To Stay

While flexible hours and remote work were already in place for some companies and startups, COVID forced everyone to switch full time to remote work where possible. Implications of this are lasting with the infrastructure strategy set to evolve with it. Siemens, Novartis and Twitter are among the first companies to announce that they will allow employees to work remotely permanently. In order for this to happen, certain digital skills need to be in place to reduce IT support topics, and jobs descriptions have changed to allow for this flexibility. While in Europe, schools and universities are set to open with social distancing measures in place for the meantime with promisingly low stable new infection numbers, other countries remain unsure when presence- based classes will be able to resume. Education technology has proven itself worthy during the pandemic by enabling lessons and trainings to continue, and these forms of digital learning are here to stay. Even so, there is still a long way to go. Teachers and professors themselves require further training in digital didactics and to be shown the best digital tools at hand to deliver their curriculum.
